GNP Sports FC Weekly Update - 16/17 December 2023

Jat Grewal19 Dec 2023 - 20:14

Under 7 Pumas achieve milestone result in their debut season!

After 2 weekends full of postponements a milder and drier week allowed several games to go ahead on the final scheduled week before the Xmas break.

SATURDAY - GIRLS

Under 10 Panthers played against Panjab Athletic. Again the young Panthers only had the bare minimum 7 players but you wouldn’t have known it. The girls peppered the visitors goal in what was a very one sided half. Eventually the girls took a well deserved lead but some sloppy play at the back meant the teams went into the break all square. Normal service resumed in the second half with the Panthers taking full advantage of the chances created. The goals were shared between Tino and Suvreet, with the latter walking away with the match ball. Assists from Tino, Avneet and Annabel. Well done girls!

SATURDAY - BOYS

Under 7 Pumas played at home against Coventrians.  After a goalless first half, GNP took the lead early in the second before giving away a penalty (which was saved by Adam, but Coventrians scored from the rebound). GNP took the lead again but the opposition scored a late goal to leave things all square. It was a heartening performance and got the Pumas their first result of the season.  Every single GNP player was brilliant, but special recognition for PotM Dayal Rai who didn’t concede as the first half keeper, and then scored with a thumping strike in the second.

GNP Under 8 Jaguars played against Alvis Eagles. GNP started on the front foot attacking the opposition and their positive intent paid off with Angad and Agam grabbing a couple of goals before half time.  The boys went into the 2nd half full of confidence, however the opposition scored a couple to bring the scoreline back. Jaguars counter attacked and scored further goals to secure a well deserved victory! A good all round team performance, but the PotM was awarded jointly to Agam for his goalscoring and relentless pressing and Angad for his hat trick and strong defending. A great way to end the year for the boys as results have not gone our way over the past few weeks!

GNP Under 8 Lions made a strong start with Rajan opening up the scoring. Coundon Court were quick on the offensive, managing to first equalise then take the lead. The boys were determined and came back fighting! Sahib got the equaliser in the last seconds of the first half. The second half was just as enjoyable as the first with both teams battling to win the ball and making breaks for goal. Despite the enthusiasm of players and parents neither team were able to score. PotM awarded to Rivan for his solid performance in defence.

Under 8 Tigers were up against Rugby Borough Eagles. The Eagles maintained the lead throughout but with some great passing and assists from Eesa and Arveer helping Varun and Mohamed bag a couple of goals each. Kaydon also pulled off some great saves to help the scoreline remain respectable.

Under 8 Pumas hosted Coventry Phoenix Blaze. Blaze started very strong and were on the attack from the very beginning. The Pumas could not match the pace of the attacks and conceded multiple times in the first half. In the 2nd half the Pumas played much better with PotM Sunny scoring a hat trick on some quick counter attacks. However the opponents scored a couple more to keep to prevent the Pumas evening up the scoreline.

GNP Tigers hosted Claverdon FC on Saturday. An electric first half saw GNP take an early lead through Zada and Aman Dhesi. However, GNP were pegged back by some fine goals by the opposition. Going into the second half GNP piled on attack after attack but couldn’t get a goal and then were undone by a counter attack. A great game to watch for the spectators however, a nail biter for the coaches. Player of the match Prabh Dhillon. A top level performance including every conceivable type of tackle in the handbook!

SUNDAY - BOYS

Under 10 GNP Pumas faced Southam Utd and it was a strong performance from all the boys indiividually and collectively. A quick goal from Shivan followed by a second by Lekan. Second half the Pumas dominated with goals from Jaiden, Faris, Kian, Lekan, one own goal and a further 2 by Shivan to complete his hat trick!

GNP Under 10 Tigers were at home versus Cov Jag. Tigers started off very rusty having not played for quite a few weeks and with Cov Jag looking for revenge after the trophy event semi final defeat. Jag were on the front foot from the off and opened up a lead in the first half. Tigers then clicked in to gear in the second half and dominated play much more which resulted in a goal for Jaylan. Looking to get back in the game, GNP pushed on, but left gaps at the back which Cov Jag exposed on the break to increase their lead and put the game out of reach. Defeat in this game but a fantastic 2023 for the Tigers full of fine achievements!  Well done to all the boys!

Under 9 Tigers played at home against Cov Phoenix. It was a great performance to end the year, with Tigers creating some great chances and somehow failing to score! The away side caught us sleeping on a throw in and took advantage. Other than that it was a confidence-building performance and gives the Tigers something to build on next year!

Under 13 Tigers hosted top of the table Cov Jag in a challenging league match in Division A..however the boys rose to the occasion and put in one of their stronger performances this season. Despite being 3-1 down at half time, the boys redoubled their efforts and kept the 2nd half goalless which was really encouraging and should give the team hope for a positive 2nd half to the season. Tigers goalscorer was Anesu, set up by Arjan.

Under 12 Lions visited the division's form team, Chapelfields Colts Crusaders, who have won their previous 6 league games on the bounce, since losing 3-2 to GNP in the reverse tie. GNP arrived with the bare 9 players and without their keeper, and it proved to be a difficult game. Jan provided a positive threat with his strong running from midfield but was regularly foiled by the last line of defence. Chapelfields went 1 up from a soft penalty before deservedly scoring 2 more by half time. Milad at left back was GNP's standout player with good composure on the ball and some positive forward passing but it wasn't enough as Chapelfields caught GNP on the counter attack for 2 further goals in the 2nd half. Thanks to Filip and Junior who stood in as goalkeeper for a half each in the absence of Tyler.
