Pumas overcome Lions in Under 9s GNP derby thriller!

SATURDAY – GIRLS

Under 13 Panthers were up against CCC Girls. It was a nervy start by both teams but GNP managed to grab a goal with Mankirat scoring and Hannah assisting. Orna was in fantastic form coming off her line several times to thwart the attacks. Just before half time GNP pressed with several corners coming in quick succession. Through sheer persistence, Anayah hit the crossbar with a header and then managed to scramble it in following the corner taken by Rose. 2nd half GNP were determined to keep up their winning streak and some dogged defending by Avani and Lilly kept the opposition at bay. They did however manage to get one goal back but it was too late, the Panthers had secured another great win!

Under 10 Panthers vs Khalsa FC Lionesses. This friendly match, which is the third meeting of these two teams this season, saw another exciting game. The Panthers were quick out of the blocks and Jodh scored in the first minute, expertly set up by Elizabeth. The Khalsa goalie was kept busy, skillfully saving several attempts from the team. A blistering shot at goal from Elizabeth narrowly missed its target. Khalsa were swift to respond with a goal. Panthers pressed hard to deliver another fantastic goal from Jodh, set up by Khloe. The 2nd half was quite evenly matched with high energy and many gasps from the spectators as attempts at goal were thwarted by Poppy in our goal and also the Khalsa goalie. Finally, some great team play saw Elizabeth hit GNP's third goal and deliver their third win against this team this season. Well done girls!!

Under 14 Panthers lost 12-2 in a friendly against Kenilworth Wardens. The Panthers had a few chances but the home team dominated the 1st half. The Panthers started the second half much brighter and scored within 30 seconds of the restart, but the home team continued to cause problems and their midfield dominance made it difficult for the Panthers to keep hold of the ball

SATURDAY – BOYS

Under 9 Pumas played Under 9 Lions in a GNP derby match. The match started evenly as both teams vied to break the deadlock. Both teams showed great defending as the stalemate continued late into the first half until the Lions opened the scoring with a shot from Fakhir which deflected off the defender and looped into the back of the net. The 2nd half both teams were determined on the attack, and Musa scored on a counter attack to level the scoreline. This was followed by another goal from Harvey, and then Musa’s 2nd. The Lions players fought back bravely with great wide play from both Veer and Nikhil, only denied by some great defending and goalkeeping until 5 minutes before time when Nikhil was rewarded with a goal from a composed finish. Nirvair was Pumas PotM for his determined defensive performance whilst Giyaan made a solid performance of his own at the back for the Lions. All the boys played valiantly and it was a evenly matched game, a performance to be proud of for both the Pumas and Lions.

GNP Under 9 Jaguars were away against Sky Blues in the Community. The game started evenly and GNP were able to grab the lead with Raylan opening the scoring. Before the end of the first half the opposition equalised due to an unforced error in defence. 2nd half Sky Blues were more clinical with their finishes and added a couple of goals to complete the game. Great effort by the Jaguars who have recently been promoted to this division.

The first game of the league season proper for the Under 8 Pumas was away against Sporting Rugby. It was an early morning start on a sunny Saturday, and GNP were out of the blocks quickly, building up a healthy lead in the first half. The boys played incredibly well as a team, with some great passing, positional play, and teamwork. The opposition mounted a late comeback, but GNP held on for the win. Louie scored five goals (and forced an own goal), while Arjan was solid in defence and Dayal was brilliant in goal.

A game of two halves for GNP Under 8 Jaguars against Coundon Court. It's fair to say Coundon dominated the ball early and pressed very well to end the first half with a comfortable lead. A lead which was kept down by a couple of great saves by Isaac. The 2nd half could not have been more different. Stanley "You shall not Pass" Gandalf did his best impression of the Wizard by constantly clearing his lines and keeping the ball away from the Jaguars box. Isaac, Oryn and the Player of the Match Seva were constant threats down the wing with Bobby showing great control and finesse in a cultured forward’s performance. The goals came from Oryn, Isaac and Seva. Oryn down the RW with a shot which crossed the line; Isaac galloping down the RW with a fantastic cross which Seva met on the run and tapped in; Bobby with a strong run through the middle finished off nicely by Isaac; finally Seva with a long kick in from his own half which bounced past the keeper after a great press by Bobby. The game finished with a respectable scoreline in the end against a tricky opponent.

Under 8 Tigers gained promotion to Tier 2 following their impressive 4 week evaluation period, and were up against a strong opponent in Coventry Copsewood Lions. In a nail-biting encounter, the Tigers just came out just short, however there were plenty of positives to take in a game where the Tigers might have prevailed. The match was a showcase of teamwork, determination and impressive skills. The first half was a tense battle with GNP playing the better football and creating more clear-cut chances, however it was Copsewood taking the lead through a corner. Then Arjun slotted home after being put through to bring the Tigers back level. The Tigers started the 2nd half poorly and switched off twice again at corners to go 3-1 down. GNP responded well with the goal of the game as Gurshaan rounded off the best move of the match to set up a nail-biting finale. Copsewood hit one on the counter just before the final whistle. Kurren was the PotM with a skilful and industrious performance. GNP will want to get back to winning ways and prove themselves in this higher division.

GNP Under 8 Lions were up against Soccer Rockz in an away game. Soccer Rockz started the game very quickly and aggressively with their quick passing and opened their account with a goal. Lions were made to work very hard in defence by the opponents, showing good defensive structure but could not resist the continuous pressure and conceded 2 further goals. GNP did open their account with Harvey scoring his first goal for the team. Lions created few chances in the end but the goalkeeper made good saves and saved the game for Soccer Rockz with CCFC legend ‘Steve Ogrizovic’ also present in the opposition dugout!

The Under 7 Tigers drew this week to Sporting Rugby. GNP started really strong with Joban getting us an early goal. Sporting Rugby fought back hard and took the lead. Trailing for a short time, the Tigers continued to press in all areas of the pitch. GNPs persistence paid off, Aron scored a fantastic free kick followed by another in quick succession. Joban scored another with an impressive run and strike on goal. Great performances from Aron, Tobias, Rhys, Rayan, Joban, Sahib and Taran. Tobias was outstanding in goal, making several top level saves. Great team effort, well done Tigers!

Under 7 Lions played Christ The King who from the outset put the pressure on the Lions, scoring their first goal moments into the game. The boys had to dig deep to find the energy they showed in the previous weeks to try get back into the game. Lions saw a stand-out performance from Elliott, who scored his first goal for the Lions, travelling with the ball from his own half. Theo did all he could to keep the Lions in the game with some great saves. Lions created a few chances in the last quarter, however the goalkeeper protected CTK dominance, giving them the victory.

SUNDAY – BOYS

Under 16s went 2-0 up after 20 mins against bottom of the table Copsewood Tigers. A few injuries at the back led to the opposition getting back into the game and equalising just before half time. A tactical change was made at the break and then the boys went into overdrive in the 2nd half and scored 7 goals to win 9-2!
Under 14 Tigers visited Cov Jag Youth and picked up their 1st league win of the season at the 3rd attempt. It was all square at the break 2-2, before GNP found their rhythm and prevailed with a final scoreline of 6-3.

Under 13 Tigers hosted Coventry Hydras in the Sunday PM kick off and started the game superbly, throwing numbers forward and using the wings well. This led to two early goals from crosses that weren’t cleared, one for Arjun and another for Harshaan. Hydras, however, responded with spirit, hitting back with 3 goals before half time to stun GNP and take the lead! 2nd half saw GNP raise their intensity levels and the goal of the game tied things up at 3-3. PotM Aarun S combined smartly with Harman S down the left. Harman beat his man yet again to the byline and smartly cut it back to Ehan, who took his time before slotting the ball past the keeper for his 2nd goal in 2 games. Brand new signing Daniel grew into the game nicely as it wore on, and created the 4th GNP goal with a press on the edge of the box which teed up Arjun who scored at the 2nd attempt. The game was effectively sealed a few minutes later when more GNP pressure forced a handball in the box. Arjun stepped up to rifle the spot kick into the net for his hat trick and a well-earned 3 points for the Tigers! Final score 5-3

Under 13 Lions visited C.H.E.S.S Tigers in confident mood after last week’s goalfest, and controlled the game in the 1st half without any reward. 2nd half saw much of the same as GNP pushed forward constantly, but a mixture of rash decision making and poor shooting let the home team off the hook, with the CHESS goalkeeper rarely being asked to make any meaningful saves. The breakthrough finally came with some smart work from Mohamed down the left, releasing Reon, who shrugged off the defender before firing through the keeper’s legs. Unfortunately the lead didn’t last long when a rare CHESS attack saw the striker break through the middle. GK Harman rushed off his line and got a good hand on the ball, but it bounced agonizingly over him and dropped gently over the line for the equalizer. The coaches made some attacking changes and the Lions pushed forward strongly for the winner. A penalty was won for a CHESS handball with 5 mins remaining but was unfortunately lifted over the bar. The game ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw. On a positive note, it made it three games unbeaten for the GNP Lions. PotM: Theo.
Under 12s Pumas had an away game against Coventry Utd. Following on from an excellent display against Bedworth Eagles, in the U12s Puma’s last fixture. The Pumas were not at their best, but got the win with a 3-0 victory courtesy of a double from Nathan Ngu who took his tally to 11 for the campaign! Pumas 3rd was scored by Armaan Vraitch, A fantastic lob, struck from distance by Armaan, giving the keeper no chance and helping Pumas to slowly climb the league.

Under 11 Tigers were in action away at Coventry Phoenix Blaze. Tigers started off on fire and were unlucky not to be up by a few goals, with the Phoenix keeper in inspired form. Deadlock was finally broken by Alfie with a sweet shot. Tigers again were denied by the keeper. Phoenix got back into the game with a penalty. Then the game swung with Phoenix taking the lead against the run of play. Second half a breakaway from Phoenix put them further up. Tigers kept going and were rewarded with a goal from Shaan. Tigers again piled on the pressure and finally Reece scored to level things up. But we were not finished there. Tigers went for the win and some great play around the box found Reece who slotted away for his second. Tigers subsequently held on to the lead. A pulsating match and very much deserved for the Tigers.

Under 10 Tigers were away against Dunlop Jnrs in their final Trophy Event match. After a couple of losses on the bounce, the Tigers started with a change of formation. Defensively, the team was absolutely brilliant throughout the match, very well organised, and able to play from the back. The Dunlop GK was in fine form and was very commanding with crosses and stifled many attacks. Dunlop had very few chances, but an unfortunate mistake from our keeper led to the only goal of the game. There are huge positives to take from the game. We look forward to next week. PotM was Anokh, calm on the ball and excellent decision making throughout the match.

Under 9 Tigers were up against Cov Sphinx in what was effectively a Trophy Event Quarter Final. It was a tense start by both teams. The Tigers opened up the scoring with Arveer and Eesa linking up well for Josiah to slot it home. Sphinx crucially took the lead despite valiant defending by the Tigers heading into half time. Soon after the restart Sphinx increased their lead with the Tigers not quite quick enough to react to close down the opposition. Tigers continued to press and several corners in quick succession followed. This allowed Salman to score to give the Tigers hope. Unfortunately Sphinx hit back shortly after. A change in formation for the Tigers saw Joban score almost straightaway. A little too late however as Cov Sphinx moved through to the Semi-Finals. Player of the Match given to Rivan for his outstanding defensive performance which has been on display right throughout the season!
